
The culture of India generally refers to the way of life of the people, their religious believes, traditions, customs, festivals, languages, arts (dance, music, architecture), foods, etc. The languages, culture, customs and religions of Indians differ from place to place in India. For instance ‘’Namaste’’ is a common greeting in India, the people of Tamil, an Indian subcontinent do not say ‘’Namaste’’ rather they say ‘’Vanakkam’’ ‘’Namaste’’ is commonly used by Hindus and Buddhists in India and Nepal.
The traditional Indian culture is characterized by a relatively strict social hierarchy. The hierarchy has its roots and foundation in Hinduism and it defines the social order, roles and status of the people. Names also have a lot to say about a person’s culture and background. Names are highly influenced by caste and religion for instance names with the suffix ‘’Kar’’ e.g. Chandraskar means that the person is from the Maharashtan high caste, an Arabic name means that the person is a Muslim and an English name or Christian name means that the person is a Christian.
Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism are the common religions in India. India is one of the nations in the world with diverse religions and where the religions still plays a very important and prominent role in the affairs of the Indians. Christianity and Judaism are also some of the religions in India but they are not commonly practiced and as influential as Hinduism, Buddhism Sikhism and Jainism. There are several languages in India but the generally accepted one is Hindi.
The Indian dance is the expression of the divinity in man and the inner beauty and emotion. The Indian dance are classified into eight different class and they are; the satriya of the Assam, the manupuri of the Manipur, the yakshagana of the Kamataka, the kuchipudi of the Andhra Pradesh, etc. The Indian drama and theater comes a long way and has made a great impact in the Indian culture. Music is a very vital part of the Indian culture, just like the drama and theater. The Indian music carries a vital message in it, most of them talks about divinity or a loved one.
Undeniable, the culture of India is among the widest, rich and diverse cultures in the world. Indians themselves are peaceable. There is an aura of hospitality that surrounds them, despite the fact that you do not understand the language you will always find it easy to adapt as it is part of the Indian culture for Indians to be hospitable.
